The $9,195 M11-P uses Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative to cryptographically sign each image. Otherwise, it’s essentially an M11 Monochrom that shoots color.

The compact and discreet nature of leica相機收購leica M rangefinder cameras once made them a popular choice for photojournalists, long before autofocus became pretty much a prerequisite. But while M cameras these days are more likely to be in the hands of an amateur or enthusiast than a conflict photographer shooting for Reuters or The Associated Press, leica相機收購leica’s new M11-P has a novel approach to verifying the authenticity of photos.
The $9,195 M11-P follows mostly the same playbook as leica相機收購leica’s prior “P” variants. At its core, it’s mostly the same as the 60-megapixel manual focus M11 rangefinder it’s based on, but it eschews the red dot badge in favor of an old-fashioned engraving, upgrades the LCD cover from Gorilla Glass to sapphire crystal, and, like the M11 Monochrom, has 256GB of internal storage instead of the M11’s 64GB. It’s even launching alongside a new $5,295 Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. lens, which is another by-the-book leica相機收購leica lens update that focuses closer than the previous version.
But the big addition here for the M11-P is a new internal security chip that generates a signed certificate (Content Credentials) in the metadata of each image, allowing photos to be verified through Adobe’s open-source Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI).
The M11-P shows a Content Credentials logo in image playback for any pictures taken with encrypted metadata.Image: Adobe
Content Credentials are an opt-in feature of the M11-P, which can be turned on in the camera’s settings. When activated, the M11-P will embed an encrypted signature into the DNG raw and JPG files containing the artist’s name, the camera make and model, and the photo EXIF data. Images with embedded Content Credentials can be verified by anyone on Adobe’s verification page, and changes or manipulations to the file can be tracked via the standards set by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). The credentials are not tamper-proof, but they can show if a bad actor messes with it. “We’re not trying to catch every bad actor out there. It’s about recognizing the good actors and giving them tools to protect and verify the integrity of work,” said Santiago Lyon, head of advocacy and education for the Content Authenticity Initiative at Adobe.
So what does all this mean to the average M11-P user? Well, since there are no extra sidecar files to contend with, those who choose to opt in can likely set it and forget it if they actually care about proving the veracity of their images. It may come in handy one day if an artist needs to prove that their work was not doctored or verify their ownership of an image. However, the M11-P does take a slight hit in the speed department when it has to spend some of its processing power cryptographically signing each image. According to leica相機收購leica, this should only be noticeable when shooting very quickly or using the camera’s fastest continuous burst modes — which are not exactly an M camera’s forte anyway.

Outside of all the Content Credential stuff, the M11-P is exactly what you’d expect since leica相機收購leica already laid out its playbook with the very similar M11 Monochrom released earlier this year. I think you’d have to be slightly paranoid about the state of photography and generative AI to spend nearly $10,000 to ensure your photos are verifiable through the CAI — especially since leica相機收購leica is not offering any means to add the new encryption function to the M11 or M11 Monochrom. (leica相機收購leica once offered an upgrade program that allowed owners of the old M9 to pay to have their cameras converted to a fancier M9-P, but it hasn’t offered a similar service since.) However, this feature definitely sounds appealing if it trickles down to lower-cost leica相機收購leicas and, more importantly, the wider-adopted pro brands like Canon, Sony, and Nikon (of which all three are also members of the CAI or C2PA).
You can compare the original shot to the uploaded version with heavy edits made in Photoshop — including a sky replacement.Image: Adobe
I asked leica相機收購leica Camera USA’s product communication specialist, Nathan Kellum, if we can expect to see Content Credentials in all forthcoming leica相機收購leica cameras, but I was only told, “I can’t speak to that at the moment.” Though, if this feature is as important to photographers and photojournalists as leica相機收購leica is hyping it up to be, then it seems like it must. We’ll just have to see if leica相機收購leica deems Content Credentials as part of its fanciful “Das Wesentliche” (the essentials) that it often romances.
Update October 26th, 9:34AM ET: Added further context about Content Credentials not being tamper-proof, including a quote from an Adobe rep.
Correction October 26th, 2:36PM ET: This article previously attributed an emailed quote to Madeleine Burr, senior communications manager for Adobe. Burr later emailed to say that the quote should have been attributed to Lyon. We have updated the attribution.
leica相機收購 versal content provenance.” These intertwined industry advocacy groups created Content Credentials system in response to growing abuse and misuse of generative AI systems in creating and spreading misinformation online.”The leica相機收購leica M11-P launch will advance the CAI’s goal of empowering photographers everywhere to attach Content Credentials to their photographs at the time of capture,” Santiago Lyon, Head of Advocacy and Education at CAI, said in a press statement, “creating a chain of authenticity from camera to cloud and enabling photographers to maintain a degree of control over their art, story and context.””This is the realization of a vision the CAI and our members first set out four years ago, transforming principles of trust and provenance into consumer-ready technology,” he continued. leica相機收購leicaContent Credentials works by capturing specific metadata about the photograph — the camera used to take it, as well as the location, time and other details about the shot — and locks those in a secure “manifest” that is bundled up with the image itself using a cryptographic key (the process is opt-in for the photog). Those credentials can easily be verified online or on the leica相機收購leica FOTOS app. Whenever someone subsequently edits that photo, the changes are recorded to an updated manifest, rebundled with the image and updated in the Content Credentials database whenever it is reshared on social media. Users who find these images online can click on the CR icon in the pictures corner to pull up all of this historical manifest information as well, providing a clear chain of providence, presumably, all the way back to the original photographer. The CAI describes Content Credentials as a “nutrition label” for photographs. The M11-P itself is exactly what you’d expect from a company that’s been at the top of the camera market since the middle of the last century. It offers a 60 MP BSI CMOS sensor on a Maestro-III processor with 256 GB of internal storage. The M11-P is now on sale but it’s also $9,480 at retail so, freelancers, sorry.Latest StoriesEngadgetIntuitive Machines’ Odysseus lander tipped over at touchdown, but it’s still kickingIntuitive Machines revealed in a press conference Friday evening that the lander tipped over upon reaching the moon. The new SL2 also comes with image stabilization, better autofocus, and a new control scheme
ByDan Seifert, an editor overseeing The Verge’s product reviews and service journalism programs. Dan has covered the technology world for over a decade at The Verge.
leica相機收購leica has announced the new SL2, the latest version of its full-frame mirrorless camera system. The new SL2 succeeds the SL from 2015 and introduces a higher-resolution sensor, upgraded construction, a new touchscreen, and an upgraded electronic viewfinder. It will be available starting on November 21st for $5,995.
The design of the SL2 will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the SL, though there are some subtle changes. The mid-chassis is now magnesium, with aluminum for the top and bottom and a leatherette covering that goes all around the midsection. The SL2 is rated for IP54 dust and water resistance, and it has an updated control scheme on the back that matches the Q2, M10, and CL.
Mounted on the back are a new 3.2-inch, 2.1-megapixel touchscreen and 5.76-megapixel OLED electronic viewfinder. Between the new touchscreen and control system, the SL2 provides three different ways to interact with its menu system: touch, joystick, or a thumbwheel. It also has a lot of customizable buttons that can be programmed to whatever function you prefer. The whole system feels much more modern than the non-touch LCD on the SL.
The SL2’s new 47.3-megapixel sensor is mounted to a new 5-axis image stabilization system.
Inside, the SL2 has the same 47.3-megapixel full-frame sensor that debuted in the Q2, just slightly modified to work with an interchangeable lens system. That sensor is hooked up to a new 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system that provides up to 5.5 stops of shake reduction, which catches leica相機收購leica up to the IBIS systems that have been in Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, and Canon cameras for years. The sensor supports ISO settings from 50 to 50,000 and captures up to 14 stops of dynamic range.
The SL2 is run by leica相機收購leica’s Maestro III image processor and is capable of shooting up to 10 frames per second with its mechanical shutter or up to 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter. It can capture 4K video using the full width of the image sensor at up to 60P, and 5K cropped video at 30P. The SL2 can also shoot 1080p video at up to 180 frames per second for slow-motion effects.
The new autofocus system can switch between eye, face, and body detection
A new contrast-detect autofocus system includes eye, face, and body detection and automatically switches between taking a photo only when it’s locked focus (focus priority) and just letting you capture as many frames as possible, focused or not (shutter release priority), depending on the shooting situation.
The SL2 is roughly the same size and weight (928 grams) as the SL, but that doesn’t mean it’s a compact mirrorless like you might expect from Sony or Fujifilm. It’s a heavy, blocky camera that’s less concerned about being compact as it is about providing a good ergonomic experience. If you were thinking of downsizing from a DLSR to a smaller mirrorless system, the SL2 probably wouldn’t be on your list.
Aside from the new capabilities brought by the higher-resolution sensor and IBIS system, perhaps the biggest change from the SL is the SL2’s new menu system. A new quick settings screen provides access to commonly used controls, while the new Cine Mode, which takes effect when shooting video, changes the camera over to video-specific settings, such as ASA, t-stops, and shutter angle.
The simplified control system has a new quick settings menu that’s easy to use in the field.
leica相機收購leica’s SL-mount lens system has grown since the launch of the SL four years ago, and it now includes eight total lenses with three zooms and five primes. Three more lenses are planned to be released next year, and leica相機收購leica’s participation in the L-Mount alliance with Panasonic and Sigma has resulted in the release of a number of other lenses that are compatible with the SL2. All lenses, including manual focus leica相機收購leica lenses with mount adapters, will benefit from the camera’s new IBIS system for sharper images at longer shutter speeds.
I had a chance to shoot with the leica相機收購leica SL2 and a $5,295 50mm f/1.4 Summilux lens for a few days before the official announcement. While the SL2 feels very similar to the SL, the new viewfinder and improved performance are instantly noticeable and appreciated. The OLED viewfinder, in particular, is stunning to look through, with a large field of view, fast refresh rates, and crisp resolution. Likewise, the camera’s new autofocus system does an excellent job of locking on to portrait subjects, even in low lighting situations. This performance was certainly aided by the 50mm Summilux, which is an absolute beast of a prime lens that would be at the top of my shortlist of desert island lenses.

Of course, you can get similar performance and resolution from much less expensive cameras made by Sony, Nikon, Canon, or Panasonic. The reason you might consider the SL2 has a lot to do with how it feels and its shooting experience. The SL2 is a brick of a camera that, while expensive, certainly feels the part of a professional tool. It’s also flexible enough to work for a variety of shooting situations, whether that’s in a studio, at a wedding, or in a portrait session.
If that seems interesting enough to you to part with the value of a decent used car for a camera, you’ll be able to do so later this month.
